Rethinking Economics for Africa (REFA) is a movement of students, academics, and civil society building better economics in society and the classroom.
We are based in South Africa.
To make economic ideas more accessible to students and the public
To make economic theory and policy more relevant to the African continent
We want to create a sustainable, vibrant, wide-reaching community/movement of students, academics & professionals that is well-informed, motivated & passionate about promoting progressive economic thinking, teaching & learning in order to construct a just and equal society
In order to achieve our vision, we must be a well-functioning, equipped movement that empowers students & others through
organising
training and
mobilising
a new cohort of young, progressive economists and activists
REFA is a collection of student society chapters at various South African universities.
Some began as REFA chapters, and others are existing economics student societies that have decided to affiliate with the National REFA movement
All the student chapters are supported by Rethinking Economics programme officers, hosted at the Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ)
The National REFA movement is an affiliate of the global Rethinking Economics movement
Student Chapters
Individual chapters run their own activities throughout the year. This includes

where current economic issues are discussed, with a special focus on platforming alternative views
CAMPAIGNS
relating to progressive economics and curriculum reform
LEARNING ACTIVITIES
that occur regularly such as discussion groups, reading groups, and workshops

THE ANNUAL REFA FESTIVAL
is a nationally organised event which profiles heterodox economic ideas and discusses key contemporary socio-economic issues.
So far, we have hosted SIX Festivals!
